Artist Research - Chris Hudson

Chris Hudson is a model maker specializing in fairground transport and rides. His main medium is wood and he is able to constantly re invent ways of using the material to create new and different details and parts. All his work is done by hand with hand tools, no CAD/CAM is used in construction. Other than the wheels everything is built and painted by Hudson. Construction involves a variety of thicknesses of timber sheet cut to shape then glued together to create the shapes and forms of the vehicles and rides. Once the body shape is made it is mounted on a chassis and then painted in gloss enamels like the real things. Sign writing is then done by hand, a very impressive achievement when it is considered how small the letters are. His common working scale is 1/24th which leads to a great level of detail along with the room to fit fully functioning parts in to allow the rides to work like the real thing. Hudson's work allows people to see all the fun of the fair in their own houses
